The Role

Where you fit in

Manage the application of new and existing packaging within the region, taking into account HSSE, Cost, Sustainability, plant feasibility, Logistic Storage & Handling, Brand and more. Provide end-to-end technical guidance. From packaging design, manufacturing, testing, supplier qualification, Lubricant Supply Chain feasibility, to ensure that Shell Lubricants are supplied to customers in packages which meet HSSE, functional, brand and marketing requirements. The role will also be a key interface with Marketing, Contract & Procurement, and Packaging Contracts on evaluating and establishing new or alternate supply sources, deliver packaging solutions in 3 key areas: Sustainability, Cost and Innovation.

What’s the role?

Accountabilities:

  • Participate in and lead Lubricants Supply Chain portion of packaging innovation projects from their initiation, ensuring HSSE compliance, functional effectiveness, and cost competitiveness.

  • Lead implementation of packaging technical projects/initiatives in the envelope driven from global, Marketing, HSSE/legal, cost optimization and standardization activities. This includes championing and leading the Streamline Product Lifecycle Management Pack process for new pack introduction and technical evaluations/qualifications.

  • Manage the Asia pacific regional pack portfolio. Ensure that the global product catalogue (GPC) content on packs is correct and complete. Support Global SAP data preparation team related to pack codes. Identify obsolete and uncompetitive packs for removal from the portfolio.

  • Identify and deliver region or local cost initiatives to reduce inbound materials costs (logistics optimization, handling best practices, standardization and more).

  • Provide technical expertise and support to our Lubricants/Grease Manufacturing Plants on packaging technical, packaging quality and material handling best practices.

  • Create Shell Lubricants Quality System Data Sheets for packaging specifications, and work with Contract and Procurement to assure the specifications are imbedded in supplier contracts.

  • Assure that suppliers meet agreed upon specifications and standards through various means, including quality audits.

  • Provide input to and collaborate with Materials Planning in respect to feasibility and costs to implement potential customer tender initiatives; supplier performance management [quality and corrective action response, pack defect reporting (PDR)].

  • Provide input to and collaborate with Contract & Procurement in the supplier tender process with respect to supplier identification and qualification; plant capability; HSSE considerations; and total cost of ownership.

  • Act as the focal point for matters concerning packaging measures for anti-fraud and counterfeiting, all environmental and legal issues on packaging including recycling and recovery and disposal of used materials and customer service relating to packaging customer issues and concerns.

  • Benchmark internally and externally to discover and exploit best practices relating to packaging sustainability, specifications, and design. Participate in the Global Packaging Team (GPT), a virtual team of regional material technical focal point.

  • Must be willing to travel mainly in South East Asia.

Key Challenges:

APAC Region has few Lubricating Oil Blend Plant, Grease Manufacturing Plant, and toll fillers. Each site has few packaging suppliers supplying a large number of different packs by color and by label. The magnitude of complexity is high with APAC region on growing trend in expanding portfolio and chartering into new era of marketing of lubricants product to be FMCG alike. Speed, agility and delivery is critical to our growth region. There is a need to balance the resources and costs involved to support the growing region and a strong agenda to support digitalization and automation to improve our efficiencies and speed of delivery.

Key Stakeholders (Internal and External):

  • Internal - Countries Lubricant Supply Chain team, Regional LSC team, Global Packaging Category Managers, Global material technical, Marketing,

  • External - 3P suppliers - including tollers, Packaging suppliers.

Dimensions:

  • Many Operating Units with thousands of Stock Keeping Units by location

  • Significant packaging spending

  • This role is to support the Material Technical Lead to deliver, control, and sustain improvement of packaging quality to the expectations of the APAC Region and Global. This is a position that operates virtually and requires the ability to deliver through networks and without line responsibility. This role presents great opportunities to drive packaging sustainability which is one of the company’s ambitions toward Shell Powering Progress. It’s a very dynamic and challenging position that provides leadership visibility at local, regional, and global level in Shell.

What we need from you

We hope to see the following in your CV:

  • Degree (e.g. B.Sc, B.Eng) - Engineering or Chemistry or comparable technical background skills.

  • We would prefer 5 years minimum working experience in packaging technical area (including operational/in-line experience and support).

  • Skill in analysis and problem solving.

  • Evidence of excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, especially in complex business settings and in a cross-cultural and cross-functional virtual environment.

  • Knowledge in Project Management Skills.

  • Skill in new packaging development, innovation, and sustainability

  • Skill in Sourcing from supplier (Vendor Management & Purchasing).

  • Skill in Technical expertise of the elements of the Customer Value Proposition

  • Evidence of collaboration with all levels of organization and external stakeholders

  • Knowledge of ISO and ASTM (American Society of Testing Material) Standards and Test Procedures (or its equivalent)

  • Knowledge of Industrial Packaging Formats and Requirement is a plus (oil, chemical, etc.)

  • Must be a quick learner, good innovator and team player.

  • Can speak and write English fluently. Knowledge of local language is an added advantage.
